FSA ID and FAFSA Step-by-Step Process

STEP 1:  Gather your DOCUMENTS needed to complete the FAFSA

Tax documents needed are from TWO YEARS PRIOR to your HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION YEAR.  For example, if you are in the graduating class of 2020 then you would need your 2018 tax documents.

·         Your Social Security number

·         Your driver’s license (if applicable)

·         Your W-2 forms and other records of money earned

·         Your (and your spouse’s, if married) Federal Income Tax Return

·         Your parents’ Federal Income Tax Return (if you are dependent student)

o    If you need a copy of your tax record (tax transcript), you can request for one online or via mail at https://www.irs.gov/individuals/get-transcript

·         Your untaxed income records (i.e. if applicable, military benefits information, veterans benefits records, workers’ compensation, etc.)

·         Child support received

·         Worker’s compensation

·         Your current bank statements

·         Your current business and investment mortgage information, business and farm records, stocks, bond or other investment records

·         Your alien registration or permanent resident card

(if you are not a U.S. citizen)


STEP 2:   Create an FSA ID – both student AND parent need to create two, separate FSA ID accounts BEFORE completing the FAFSA.  Go to https://fsaid.ed.gov to create your FSA IDs

HELPFUL HINTS for Creating an FSA ID

·         DO NOT USE a school, work, or company email address when creating your FSA ID.  Create and use a free email account with gmail/yahoo/hotmail for your FSA ID

·         Your NAME when creating your FSA ID MUST BE THE SAME NAME on your Federal Income Tax Return and Social Security Card

·         Problems creating FSA ID?  Call 1-800-557-7394

-parent’s AND student’s social security numbers

 

-access to parent’s e-mail account (login AND password) OR cell phone (to verify registration with a pin number that will be sent to the student’s e-mail and/or cell phone) OR ability to call/text parent during registration process for parent to send the pin number that they receive to the student to complete the FSA ID registration process

STEP 3:  START working on the FAFSA UP UNTIL the “Link to IRS” page

·         It will take about 3 to 4 days for your FSA ID to be able to link your tax information to the FAFSA

·         Go to fafsa.gov to start the FAFSA

 

STEP 4:  COMPLETE the FAFSA

·         After about 3 to 4 days have passed since creating your FSA ID, log back into the FAFSA website to complete your FAFSA

·         IRS Data Retrieval – information input on FAFSA application MUST MATCH EXACTLY what is printed on your TAX DOCUMENTS. Example: 12345 Waialua RD on your tax documents must be typed in as “RD” on the FAFSA application and NOT “ROAD”
