Mun Seek Pai Memorial Scholarship (Trade Programs) SY 22/23
Mun Seek Pai was born on a sugar plantation in Kealia, Kauai on February 20, 1923, the second of six children. When World War II broke out he moved to Oahu to work at the Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard. Life and other responsibilities had stopped his formal education at 8th grade, so it was not until Pearl Harbor that he took and aced his GED. It was there in Shop 02 that he would work for the next 40 years, except for two years in the U.S. Army after World War II and 2 years with the U.S Naval Constructin Battlalion, better knkow as the Navy Seabees during the Korean War. Although he never graduated high school, he worked overtime and night shifts to ensure that every one of his six children would graduate from college. In honor of his years at Pearl Harbor, his exceptional trade skills, and his life-long love of learning this scholarship is for a graduate of Waialua High School (where his wife of sixty years graduated in 1960) seeking a certification or degree in one of the applied trades that can lead to a career at Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard.

Sophie Un Joo Pai Memorial Scholarship (Certified Nursing Assistant programs) SY 22/23
Sophie Un Joo Pai was born in Seoul, Korea on July 24, 1935. She emigrated to Hawaii with her younger brother Joe in 1954 after the Korean War ended.. Settling with family in Waialua, she entered Waialua High School at aged nineteen speaking very little English. A determined and lifelong learner, by the time she died in June 2022, she spoke nearly perfect, slightly pidgin-accented, English. At her funeral, a Waialua High School classmate shared with her children how she remembers everyone bursting into applause when Sophie finished her first speech completely in English in front of the whole class.
In addition to her love for learning, Sophie loved to help others and was a doer –restless and active. After her sixth and youngest child turned ten, she took the CNA course at Leeward Community College, graduating with classmates twenty years her junior. She went on to work at the Waimano Home Training Center as a nurse’s aide and is remembered for her energy, hard work, love of God, and always, always singing. In honor of Waialua High School – where she learned English, loved music and math, and made many friends
and in memory of her deep love of people and nurturing heart, this scholarship is for a Waialua High School graduate pursuing a degree or certification as a Nursing Assistant.
